Grace Snider Edwards is the adoptive mother of John Jr., Alicia and Carl Sanderson and was once married to Isaiah Edwards but left with herself and the children because of his alcoholism. Before meeting Isaiah, Grace was married once before to an unknown man and later widowed. She worked in the Walnut Grove post office when she met Isaiah.

Isaiah and Grace got married when they adopted the Sanderson children. They were all good friends with the Ingalls family and traveled to gold country after their crops were destroyed by heavy rain.

They eventually left gold country after seeing the results of the chance to become wealthy from their friends they had met there. The Edwards family didn’t return to Walnut Grove like the Ingalls did, and went their own way. During this time, Isaiah had a successful logging empire — and was crippled for a time after saving Alicia from a falling tree.

After resigning from life, Grace wrote the Ingalls for help. Edwards did eventually recover with the help of Laura and Charles Ingalls.

Years later, John Jr. was murdered on the street and Isaiah started drinking heavily. Grace left Isaiah and Carl and Alicia stayed with her.

Walnut Grove was a small town in Minnesota that was founded by Lars Hanson in 1840. It is where Oleson’s Mercantile, the post office, the church and school, the feed and seed warehouse and Hanson’s mill were located among others. The Oleson family lived directly in Walnut Grove while the Ingalls family lived in Plum Creek, and the Edwards and later the Garveys lived near there as well. Harriet and Nels Oleson also built Nellie a restaurant in Walnut Grove.

Because of it’s generally friendly people and “small town charm”, Walnut Grove had many passerbys; some of which took advantage of it’s friendly folk such as the Galender brothers. The town did become a ghost town except for Doctor Baker and Lars Hanson when the Ingalls, Olesons and Garveys left to live in Winoka for a time.

While they were away, Lars had a stroke and Doctor Baker cared for him; Charles and Jonathan Garvey helped when they returned to hero township. He did recover the best that could be expected of him, but died not long after.

Walnut Grove was blown up by it’s townspeople in 1901.

The Ingalls family move to the banks of Plum Creek, near Walnut Grove, Minnesota. To acquire the deed to his farm, Charles takes several jobs. Eventually, the multiple duties and the stress become too much, and an exhausted Charles becomes injured during a picnic with his family.

When a feed dealer takes advantage of him to take his oxen, he and his young children try to meet the deadline. This sends several of Walnut Grove’s businessmen into action to help their new friend. In the end, Laura reminisces about her father claiming to reap a harvest he did not expect, a harvest of friends.
